The Challenge:

Modernising the Eurotunnel toll stations with a solution that would protect advanced electronic equipment while ensuring reliable and safe operation in extreme conditions.

The main challenge was to implement a solution capable of protecting and operating next-generation electronic systems, guaranteeing continuous, reliable, and safe operation under demanding climatic and operational conditions.

ADVANTAGES OF THE IMPLEMENTED SOLUTION

Delvalle supplied custom-designed electrical enclosures from the Tropico Series, which not only offer a high degree of sealing and corrosion resistance but also allow the integration of smart systems for real-time passenger counting and vehicle classification.

Key advantages include:

  • Superior protection in harsh environments:
With an IP66 ingress protection rating and IK10 impact resistance, these enclosures provide strong defence against moisture, dust, and vandalism—common challenges in infrastructures like the Eurotunnel.
  • Long-term durability and corrosion resistance:
Made of AISI 304L stainless steel or painted galvanized steel, the Tropico Series enclosures offer a lifespan of over 30 years without the need for maintenance, even in environments with high humidity or salinity.
  • Anti-vandal and secure design:
Equipped with triple-action swing handles and anti-vandal locking systems, these enclosures prevent unauthorised access and protect critical control and communication equipment.
  • Adaptability and customisation:
Delvalle provides tailor-made solutions, adapting the enclosures to the specific requirements of the project, including dimensions, ventilation systems, and mounting options.

RESULTS ACHIEVED

Thanks to the application of Delvalle enclosures, the first toll lanes of the Eurotunnel have started operating with the new automated vehicle and passenger control systems, significantly improving accuracy and process speed. The solution has successfully passed initial testing and is already planned for progressive rollout across a total of 20 lanes, consolidating a high-impact technological transformation.

CONCLUSION

This project is a clear example of Delvalle’s commitment to innovation, quality, and customised manufacturing. Taking part in the Eurotunnel modernisation not only strengthens our position as a leader in industrial electrical enclosures, but also demonstrates how our solutions help major infrastructures move towards a more efficient, secure, and technology-ready future.
